Chiefs star Tyrann Mathieu was placed on the NFL's Reserve/Covid-19 list on Wednesday, after testing positive for coronavirus.

Matthieu is vaccinated, Adam Teicher of ESPN reported, so his time away from the team could feasibly be relatively brief.

Per league virus protocols, the three-time All-Pro will need to be asymptomatic and test negative twice within a 24-hour period before he can be activated, whereas unvaccinated players must first isolate for 10 days before they can be tested and potentially return.

The Chiefs open against the Browns on Sept. 12 in Kansas City, which will have been 11 days from when Mathieu was made inactive.

Kansas City's depth chart showed just three other safeties -- Daniel Sorensen, Juan Thornhill, and Armani Watts -- on the roster as of Wednesday night. Earlier in the day, the team re-signed wide receiver Marcus Kemp, who was cut on Tuesday, to account for Mathieu's roster spot, the ESPN report said.

Last year, Mathieu, 29, was named an All-Pro for the second consecutive year. His other nod came with the Arizona Cardinals in 2015.
