Was it Kirby Smart all along?

Over the weekend, Georgia defeated the Oregon Ducks 49-3 in their season opener and despite the amount of defensive talent the Dawgs lost to the NFL earlier this year, Saturday’s performance may have proved that although younger on that side of the ball, they may not have skipped a beat in reloading.

On Tuesday, Jon Chuckery was joined by AJC Georgia beat writer, Chip Towers and the two discussed Georgia’s win and how impressed they both were with the play of the defense. “I’m not sure people locally, have the full grasp of the idea of how good this program is, how good of shape that they are and how much talent is not just here today but is here for the next few years with this program,” stated to Towers in regards to how there had been talk of how the Georgia defense may take a step back after losing as many players as they did after their championship win back in January.

While agreeing that the team is fairly young, Towers pointed out to Chuckery that dating back to his days under Saban at Alabama, Georgia head coach, Kirby Smart, was often times viewed as the one that was truly behind the Tide’s consistency in recruiting the nation’s top talent and keeping the program in championship contention. “It was one of those things they said, ‘is it him or is it Saban,’ you know I think we’re learning that Kirby Smart had a lot to do with Alabama’s success, certainly their defensive success during that run, but he was also one of Nick Saban’s lead recruiters and so he’s carried that over to Georgia,” Towers told Chuckery.
