What do we know about the Falcons' offensive identity?

Jon Chuckery and Steve Wyche discuss what the Atlanta Falcons offensive identity potential could be

Who will they be? That is the question many Falcons fans have when it comes to the teams’ offense and the style of play they will have this season. As training camp has begun and players compete for starting positions, particularly on the offensive line, the hope is that we will soon find out what direction Atlanta will be heading in when the 2022 season kickoffs.

On Wednesday, Jon Chuckery was joined by former Falcons beat writer and NFL analyst Steve Wyche and the two discussed the very topic to which Wyche told Chuckery that it is a known fact that Falcons head coach, Arthur Smith “wants to run the ball and set up everything off the run,” and that the final decision on who the starting quarterback will be between Marcus Mariota and rookie Desmond Ridder, will play a role in what the offense will eventually look like.

“Both quarterbacks can move. If it’s Marcus, they’re going to move the ball around a lot in terms of moving the pocket, that will help them with some of the potential line concerns,” Wyche told Chuckery acknowledging that their offensive line deficiencies could prove to be problematic for the Falcons and putting them into a “quick passing game” situation. Wyche would go on to tell Chuckery that ultimately, he believes Atlanta will have to rely on multiple players offensively to be efficient, however it may all come down to what the offensive line is able to do.

“It’s just such a hard read depending if it’s Marcus or Desmond Ridder at quarterback and who along the offensive line can do certain things. Is it a zone blocking scheme, can they line up in power, will they have to use a fullback at times, will they have to go two tight in line at times? Sure. They’re going to try everything they can to possess the ball and move the ball”. Click link above to here interview in its entirety.
