RIVERSIDE, Calif. (KNX) — A five-vehicle chain collision on Interstate 215 in Riverside on Thursday injured five people, critically, and forced a partial closure of the northbound side of the freeway.

The crash occurred at around 10:35 a.m. in the No. 1 and No. 2 lanes of the northbound I-215, north of Central Avenue, California Highway Patrol said. A bux truck, pickup and three sedans collided. Circumstances leading up to the crash were not immediately known.
The HOV, fast lane, and No. 2 lane were blocked by the ensuing wreck, and a SigAlert was issued at 10:50 a.m. due to the resulting traffic jam.
Riverside County Fire department crews responded to the scene 15 minutes later and found one victim with significant injuries, one with moderate injuries, and three with minor injuries, officials said.
Those with minor injuries were evaluated by paramedics at the scene. The other two parties were transported to nearby hospitals.
As of 11:10 a.m., the northbound side of I-215 remained partially shut down with traffic limited to two lanes headed toward downtown Riverside. CHP said lanes should reopen by noon.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
