A Boy Scout yacht was stolen from a dock in Marina del Rey last week.

Skipper and scout leader Paul Renner told KNX News’ Karen Adams that the Island Hopper, a 1979 30-foot Islander sailboat, was going to be used to expand the Boy Scouts Sea Scouts program in Marina del Rey.

“It wasn't a beautiful yacht like a millionaire would have, but it was perfect for a bunch of teenagers, and a couple of adult leaders to take to Catalina or to do a day sail up to Malibu and back, that kind of thing, and get them trained,” Renner said.

But, sometime between March 17th and the 21st, the yacht was stolen and replaced with a beat-up look-alike. Renner said that whoever did it also switched out the DMV vessel number with the beat-up one they left behind.

“Thinking that we wouldn't notice that our boat had somehow shrunk from 30 ft to 28 ft and got a lot more beat up than ours was,” Renner said.

The program has now been put on hold.

“You shouldn't steal in the first place, but stealing from the Sea Scouts, that's kind of low,” he said.

Anyone with any information about the theft was urged to call the L.A. County Sheriff's Department.
