SAN CLEMENTE ISLAND (KNX) – An investigation was underway Wednesday after a corporate jet crashed into the waters off San Clemente Island.

The plane was heading toward San Diego at the time of the crash, but its final destination is unknown at this time. There were reportedly three people onboard the flight

The crash happened around 8 a.m. when the jet advised an air traffic control station on San Clemente Island that they were in trouble, according to Coast Guard Chief Petty Officer Levi Read.

“The Coast Guard launched an inmate 60 Jayhawk helicopter shortly after notification and arrived on scene at 8:55 a.m. this morning and they were immediately vectored into a debris field one nautical mile southwest of San Clemente Island,” he said.

Read said the Coast Guard, as well as the US Navy are searching for any possible survivors.

The jet was identified as a Phoenix Air Learjet owned by Fireside Partners in Delaware.
