The Association of Deputy District Attorneys has filed a legal action against Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón, alleging a deliberate failure to comply with the California Public Records Act.

The union representing deputy district attorneys contends in its Los Angeles Superior Court petition that Gascón's failure to comply with the law and provide documents the union says contradicts Gascón's promise of transparency.

"The public must be aware of George Gascón's lack of transparency," union President Michele Hanisee said. "His calculated and persistent refusal to comply with California's freedom of information law is one of the worst examples of that, but it's not the only one. Voters deserve to know his entire record before they vote."

There was no response to an email sent Thursday night to a representative of Gascón's office seeking comment on the petition brought Wednesday.

Numerous public records requests directed to the custodian of records within Gascon's office have gone unanswered, according to the 88-page petition, which cites examples where Gascón allegedly claimed improper and nonexistent legal justifications to avoid his mandated disclosure obligations.

The petition also alleges that at times Gascón selectively turned over some documents while claiming it was overly burdensome to produce others.
