Some relief may finally be coming to our wallets as the price of eggs continues its decline since hitting record highs last year.
A historic outbreak of bird flu led to the price of eggs increasing to an average of $4.24 last December, with some grocery stores even selling a dozen for over $7.
Last month though, egg prices fell 11%, on top of the 7% they fell in February, and some experts believe it won’t be long before the average cost of a dozen eggs will hover around $1.
Karyn Rispoli, who heads egg market coverage at Urner Barry, says this would be the first time the price of eggs has dropped below $1 since July, 2021.
She told CNBC, “It’s been all down [since Easter],” she said. “It’s certainly been undergoing a very sharp correction.”
Thankfully, there have been no new cases of bird flu detected at commercial egg farms since December, which has allowed retailers to have “cart blanche,” according to Rispoli, to do what they want with their pricing.
