Texas Governor Greg Abbott has some new instructions for the Texas Education Commissioner after the Uvalde school shooting. He sent a letter to Commissioner Mike Morath outlining steps he would like schools to take before the start of the new school year this fall.

The Governor says a bill he signed into law after the Santa Fe school shooting requires the Texas Education Commission to adopt rules on building standards for existing school facilities and more stringent standards for new school buildings. He wants Commissioner Morath to work on new rules to make sure that existing school facilities are also held to heightened safety standards.

The Governor's letter also calls for school districts to identify other steps they can take before the start of the new school year to make their campuses more secure. He also wants them to work on ways to increase the presence of police officers or other law enforcement officers on campus.

The letter also tells Commissioner Morath to send instructions to school districts to set up procedures for inspecting all of their exterior doors. The Governor wants weekly inspections to make sure exterior doors on school campuses are secure.

"We must do everything possible to protect children and safeguard our schools," the Governor wrote.
