Los Angeles City Councilmember Joe Buscaino (D-15) is looking to chomp down on chop shops.

The councilman – who is also running for mayor in 2022 – asked the City Attorney to draft an ordinance Tuesday.

Buscaino referenced the city of Long Beach, where lawmakers enacted an anti-” chop shop” law.

“Thousands of residents in our city rely on bicycles as their primary means of transportation,” the motion said. “The proliferation of bicycle chop shops on our streets creates a public safety hazard, and the fact that they currently operate with impunity only encourages the increasing theft of bicycles.

“This motion will finally provide consequences for this criminal activity which will lead to a decrease in bicycle thefts,” the motion continued.

Buscaino believes the issue of bicycle theft goes unaddressed and is a problem for residents who rely on bikes as transportation, according to Yo! Venice.
