Landmark Pico to close at the end of May

LOS ANGELES (KNX) – Another beloved movie theater in Los Angeles is closing.

The Landmark Pico theater complex in the old Westside Pavilion is set to close at the end of May.

“For months, we’ve worked to extend our tenancy of The Landmark Pico but have been unable reach terms,” Landmark Theatres’ President Kevin Holloway said in statement posted on the location’s Instagram page.

“We send our deepest appreciation to the Pico staff, guests, and the filmmaking community for their support over the years. We’re exploring opportunities to expand our Los Angeles footprint, which we hope to be able to share more on soon.”

The location - best known for hosting question and answer sessions with filmmakers – is one of many heartbreaks for independent movie lovers, as well as movie theater lovers.

After closing due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Pacific Theatres and ArcLight Cinemas announced in April 2021 that it would not reopen theaters. In late July, rumors swirled around that officials were working to reopen the Archlight and the Cinerama Dome in December.

In December, it was reported the Cinerama Dome could possibly reopen in 2022 after an application notice for a liquor license was posted outside the theater.

Marc Malkin, senior editor at Variety and host of the 'Just for Variety' podcast, told KNX News, some movie fans don’t feel comfortable returning to theaters.

“The pandemic has just affected the movie theater-going audience forever,” he said. “Obviously, people feel a lot more comfortable watching a movie from home where they know they’re safe from COVID.”

In return, he said, theaters are turning to big budget films

“So what you have is, theater chains are saying ‘What makes money?’ What makes money? Tent-pole movies, Marvel movies, action movies, big rom-coms,” Malkin said. “This independent movie theater-going audience, they’re just not returning to theaters as these theater owners had hoped.”
