A Los Angeles County man and woman pleaded guilty to scamming a senior citizen out of $25,000.
Shaohua Sun, 39, and Yanwen Gu, 40, each pleaded guilty to felony conspiracy to commit elder abuse, according to the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office.
Officials say that in March, the suspects sent a text message to the elderly victim, asking him to confirm an $350 Apple Store purchase on his credit card. The text also had a number and urged the man to call immediately.
When he called, the suspects pretended to be with a bank fraud prevention department and told the victim his account was linked to child pornography. They then instructed him to withdraw $25,000 to give to a supposed undercover police officer as evidence, which he did at a meeting place.
The victim became suspicious and called the Ventura Police Department. Officers set up a sting operation, and when the suspects asked for more money, officers arrested the pair.
Sun and Gu face four years in prison.
