
Deputies shot and killed a man in Compton on Thursday night after he allegedly shot at a law enforcement helicopter.
It happened in the 14600 block of Cahita Avenue near Rosecrans Avenue around 8:45 p.m. Lt. Steven De Jong told reporters that deputies responded to a 911 call by the man’s family.
“An individual at that location called the sheriff’s station reporting that a family member was in the backyard of their residence and was armed with a shotgun and had fired off around …and was under the influence of some side of a drug or alcohol,” he said.
Lt. De Jong said that the man was on the roof with a shotgun where he fired at least four to six times at the helicopter. The helicopter was struck at least one time.
The man allegedly shot at deputies. The deputies returned fire, striking and killing him.
The man was identified by the Department of the Medical Examiner as 30-year-old Jerman Magana.
