A section of the Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu was closed early Wednesday morning due to a standoff between deputies and an armed assault suspect barricaded inside a van.

All lanes of PCH were closed from Heathercliff Road to Busch Drive.

Lost Hills Sheriff's Station Capt. Jennifer Seetoo said during a press conference that it started at 1 a.m. when a deputy saw the camper van parked in a no parking zone didn’t have a current registration.

“They determined that he did have a felony warrant and then the suspect assaulted the deputies with a fire extinguisher, spraying the deputies in the eye with the chemicals,” she said.

She added that he began to throw things outside the van that were lit on fire.

The fire department and SWAT also responded. SWAT eventually pinned the suspect’s car and deployed a gas.

“[The suspect] actually came out and surrendered and they were able to cuff him without further incident,” Seetoo said.

The lanes from Heathercliff Road to Busch Drive were reopened after 9 a.m.
