More than 100 homes in the Rancho Palos Verdes community had their gas shut off earlier this week because of the ongoing landslide, sparking fears that electricity or water could be next.

KNX News’ Nataly Tavidian attended a community meeting held for residents in Rancho Palos Verdes Wednesday night.

City Manager Ara Mihranian said Cal Water is not going to pull its service from the community. Southern California Edison said a power shutoff wouldn’t happen this week or next, but utility representatives did notify residents if the landslide gets to a point where a shutoff is warranted, it’ll give as much advance notice as possible.

“What we saw on Monday was an area that we had previously serviced just seven days prior, and we put what's called slack between two lines," a representative with SoCal Edison said. “And so that means we gave a little bit of give so that it could move along with the land movement.”

But in those seven days, the two connected poles snapped in half, the representative said.

City leaders are hoping to put together a resource center and hold a contractor fair. People at the meeting said they can’t waste any more time without taking action.

Also, starting Thursday, city workers will be driving around and possibly yellow tagging homes to let people know it’s time to harden their homes.
