After months of public prodding, Florida governor and Republican presidential contender Ron DeSantis has agreed to debate California Gov. Gavin Newsom on the Fox News network.
Newsom first challenged DeSantis to a debate in September 2022, after the Florida governor sent two planes of migrants to Martha’s Vineyard. In June, Newsom told Fox News host Sean Hannity that he was “all in” to debate DeSantis at any time.
During an appearance on Fox News Wednesday night, DeSantis finally accepted the challenge, saying he welcomes the chance to contrast his conservative policies with the liberal ones pushed by Newsom.
“This is the debate for the future of our country, because you have people like Joe Biden, they would love to see the Californication of the United States,” DeSantis said.
A Newsom aide told Politico the California governor’s office sent a formal request to Fox News last week, proposing a live 90-minute debate on November 8 or 10 moderated by Hannity.
The debate is expected to cover a wide range of issues, including immigration and education policies, which Newsom has hammered DeSantis about in recent months. In May, Newsom demanded records from Florida textbook publishers to ensure the state’s “extremist agenda” hadn’t influenced the material heading to California classrooms.
Newsom also said in June he planned to investigate the two flights of migrants DeSantis sent to Sacramento, suggesting the Florida governor could face kidnapping charges.
