A motorcyclist traveling through Utah on Saturday almost had a deadly crash after falling 40-50 feet off a cliff. The rider was eventually found by authorities, but only because his smartwatch sent a crash alert, law enforcement shared.
In a press release, the Washington County Sheriff’s Office shared that the man was riding his motorcycle near Warner Valley when the accident occurred.
The man’s smartwatch alerted police that he had been in a crash, sending search and rescue crews, deputies, and a Life Flight helicopter to rescue him.
After arriving at the crash site, officers were able to stabilize him before transporting him to a local hospital. The man is being treated for severe injuries and was in critical condition when he was first found.
Officers have shared that he is expected to recover from his injuries. However, police have not yet shared his identity or what caused his fall to happen.
Police did not note the brand of a smartwatch the man was wearing. However, the latest models of the Apple Watch and iPhone have “Crash Detection” features designed to detect severe car crashes—such as front-impact, side-impact, and rear-end collisions, and rollovers—involving sedans, minivans, SUVs, pickup trucks, and other passenger cars,” Apple says on its website.
