A top executive for Southwest Airlines will face lawmakers in Washington this week.

Members of the U.S. Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation want answers about the airline's massive scheduling failure in December that cancelled thousands of flights and stranded travelers after Christmas.

The committee hearing is scheduled for the morning of Thursday, February 9th. It is being called "Strengthening Airline Operations and Consumer Protections". Senators are scheduled to hear from several witnesses including Andrew Watterson, the Chief Operating Officer of Southwest Airlines and Captain Casey A. Murray, President of the Southwest Airlines Pilots Association.

The U.S. Department of Transportation is also investigating Southwest Airlines to determine if the company engaged in deceptive practices by posting a schedule for flights that company leaders knew was unrealistic.
