I started working for 93.3 the Planet way back in March of 1999 as a part time weekend/overnight on-air guy that was fresh out of college (Winthrop University).
I started my college career aspiring to be a high school math teacher but always had a passion for music and had a strong interest in radio. Long story short, I ended up abandoning my teaching career goals and pursued radio.
I left the Planet and my hometown of Greenville for a short time in late 2003 and took a part time gig at 99X in Atlanta. After a change in management that resulted in my departure, I returned home and was welcomed back to the fold in early 2005. I quickly advanced to the evening time slot which I held for about a year before the departure of my predecessor which opened the door for me to take on my current position in March of 2007.
Being music director of one of the strongest active rock stations in the country has given me many unique opportunities with all sorts of celebrities (and not just musicians)!
One unique opportunity I was given was having Corey Taylor and Shawn “Clown” Crahan of Slipknot take over my show for a couple of hours nearly ten years ago which was an absolute blast as they made some very interesting music selections!
As much fun as that was, however, it’s going to be hard to top the time I got to play bass for Skillet a few years ago when they were in town. I got to rock out to their biggest hit “Monster” in front of thousands of fans of both the band and the station.
Despite all of these passions I have for music, I was just recently given a new passion that far exceeds them. On December 22, 2017, at age 41, I finally became a father of a beautiful baby boy named Gideon Lee Holcombe. As much as I love working in radio and playing music, this is by far the best job I have ever had.
