Forget the friends to lovers or enemies to lovers trope, the Todd Phillips' sequel to the 2019 Batman prequel Joker, centers around Quinn and Joker as patients to lovers, after meeting in Gotham City’s Arkham Asylum.
Back in April, we got the first look at Gaga’s twisted take on Harley Quinn, alongside Joaquin Pheonix, reprising his role and maudlin rendition of the Clown Prince of Crime.
The dark and gritty teaser shows Arthur Fleck, aka Phoenix’s Joker and Gaga’s Harley Quinn meeting in Arkham Asylum, where Joker finds himself locked up at the conclusion of the first film. And as we all know — the two end up falling madly, deeply, and dangerously in love.
In the new, first full trailer, we get a much more detailed look at the film’s storyline and Gaga’s role as Quinn, which doesn’t seem to start off as a psychiatrist, as the original character did in Batman the Animated Series or previous live-action renditions by Margot Robbie.
The trailer begins with Fleck being transferred to Arkham following the murder of talk show host Murray Franklin at the end of Joker. While awaiting trial and struggling with his dual identity, Joker not only finds love with fellow inmate Harley Quinn, “but also finds the music that's always been inside him,” according to the YouTube description.
“When I first saw Joker, when I saw you,” Quinn says, “for once in my life, I didn’t feel so alone anymore.”
Backed by Frank Sinatra’s “When You’re Smiling,” the trailer takes you on a rollercoaster ride between scenes within the confines of Arkham, and Harley smashing windows in the outside world. From courtroom shenanigans, crazy crowds, explosions, and what is most likely psychosis visions of themselves as an actual musical duo (a la Johnny and June).
“Look around, look at all these people,” Joker says during his trial, which he turns into a literal circus, wearing his signature makeup. “I will no longer allow any of you to keep me down.”
The film also stars Brendan Gleeson and Catherine Keener, alongside Zazie Beetz, reprising her role from the first film.
Joker: Folie à Deux is set to release on Friday, October 4, 2024. Check it out the brand new trailer below.
