PITTSBURGH (93.7 the Fan) – Not surprising to those close to the program, but made official on Wednesday afternoon, as Pitt sophomore guard Trey McGowens entered the transfer portal.
He won’t turn 20 until May, McGowens was Pitt’s highest ranked recruit since Steven Adams. He was also Jeff Capel’s first signee, but seemed more-and-more at odds with how Capel wanted to play.
McGowens did not score in double figures in any of his final seven regular season games this year, but did have some big games at Pitt.
McGowens helped the Panthers win the first ever game at the UPMC Events Center at Robert Morris with 25 points, 8 rebounds, 5 assists and 4 steals. As a freshman, the guard scored 33 points in a win over Louisville and 30 in beating Florida State.
A 6’4” guard from Pendelton, South Carolina, he also had interest from Clemson, Minnesota, Ole Miss and St. John’s before initially deciding on Pitt in April of 2018.
McGowens scored 764 points while making 64 starts in his pair of seasons at Pitt.
