BROOKLYN, MI (93.7 The Fan) – Team Penske's Joey Logano held off Monster Energy Chip Ganassi Racing's Kurt Busch in NASCAR Overtime to win the rain-delayed Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series FireKeepers Casino 400 Monday at Michigan International Speedway.
Logano lined up first followed by Martin Truex Jr. and Busch as the green flag flew in overtime and Busch passed Truex in Turns 3 and 4 and took the white flag in second place, but Logano was too strong and picked up his 2nd win of the year and 23rd win of his career.
"You don't have days like that that are so close to perfect," said Logano. "The execution, the strategy, the pit stops. The driver did pretty good too, made one mistake, but made up for it. That's good. Ultimately Victory Lane."
Busch said he had a game plan to get the No. 1 Camaro past Logano, but a late caution thwarted those plans.
"I really wanted it to go green at the end with Truex," said Busch. "I was going to push him straight through the 22 (Logano). My best shot at it. Logano's car was tough."
Busch's second place finish was his ninth top-10 finish of 2019.
"We'll get it," said Busch. "It gives us reason to smile and be happy. We ran up front, were strong in our manufacturer's back yard, but got second today."
Truex settled for third followed by Daniel Suarez and Kyle Busch.
Logano's teammate Brad Keselowski finished sixth followed by Kevin Harvick. Ryan Newman, Ryan Blaney and Alex Bowman rounded out the top 10.
The next Monster Energy Cup Series race is the Toyota/Save Mart 350, Sunday, June 23 at Sonoma Raceway in California.
