Penn State Line Leaders Aren't Questioning Decisions To Return

Michal Menet and Will Fries
Jeffrey Becker-USA TODAY Sports

(93.7 The Fan) - Center Michal Menet and right tackle Will Fries are the leaders of a strong and experienced Penn State offensive line.  Both players just as easily could be NFL rookies and not have to wonder if they will get to play their senior seasons for the Nittany Lions.

"I'm definitely not second-guessing my decision," said Menet during a video conference Wednesday.  'I put a lot of time into it and it really was a kind of easy decision for me.  There are definitely things that I need to work on to become a better player, and I've been addressing those since the season ended.  It's been a positive for me."

Fries said during his video conference that he, too has no regrets.

"None at all.  I think it was the right decision for me to come back, and I'm really happy that I did.  It just is what it is at this point."

With almost daily rumors about the 2020 season, both players said it's out of their control.  Menet said he can only control so much.

"There's obviously some concern there, but that's why every single day I'm working as hard as I can so I'm prepared for whenever the season begins and move forward from there," Menet said.

Fries echoed those thoughts.

"There's nothing I can do about it," said Fries.  "It's out of my control.  I can't worry about it.  The only thing I can do is just get myself better every day so whenever that time comes that we do play I'll be ready to go."

Fries and Menet praised new offensive line coach Phil Trautwein, who was hired in January and has had limited opportunities to work with his pupils.

Fries revealed that Trautwein had former Nittany Lion--and current Steelers lineman--Stefen Wisniewski speak to the team during a recent video conference.

"Wis is a Penn State guy through and through, and he was awesome," Fries said.  "You hear his perspective from a guy who's ten years in the league.  He explained things that you wouldn't think about from a football IQ perspective, but that's what separates him and why he's been able to be in the league for so long.  You fully understand how smart he is, all the tips he was able to share with us.  It was really, really beneficial.  I took a ton of notes on all the things he had to say."

HUGE thanks to @steelers guard and proud Penn State alum. @stefenwiz61 for stopping by to talk shop with the @PennStateFball OL room! Everyone learned a ton! (Including me!) #NeverStopLearning #PennsylvaniaProud #WeAre pic.twitter.com/z3gfYEH4yY

With Trautwein and the team's training and nutrition staffs keeping close tabs, both the 309-pound Fries and Menet, who weighs 307, said they're eating well, working out diligently and staying in shape.
