The Pirates split their squad and ended up getting swept - 7-3 by the Tigers in Bradenton and 4--3 by the Phillies in Clearwater.
Richard Rodriguez gave a home run in his inning and lefthander Robbie Erlin, in camp on a minor league contract after 7 seasons with the Padres, gave up a 3-run homer to Daniel Pinero who split time between AA Erie and AAA Toledo in 20-19. Finally, van rider Nicolas Economos gave up a solo shot in the 9th
Second baseman JT Riddle went 2-for-2 from the leadoff spot. After he singled in the first ining, he went from first to third on an infield out to set up Will Craig's sacrifice fly and later tripled home the PIrates' third run. Catcher Luke Maile also had 2 hits and drew praise from Holland and Manager Derek Shelton for his work behind the plate. (Listen to Shelton post-game below.) SS prospect O'Neal Cruz had an RBI double while 20-year outfielder Cal Mitchell added a sac fly.
In Clearwater, Trevor Willians allowed 4 runs on 4 hits and a walk in the first inning, then got the Phils 1-2-3 in the second. Jose Osuna had 2 hits for the Bucs. Former Pirate Neil Walker played first base and went 0-for-2. Second baseman Josh Harrison went 1-for-1 with a walk.
The Bucs play a rare early spring training night game tomorrow in Tampa. Chris Archer is scheduled to start against former Pirate, Gerrit Cole, making his Yankees debut. We will have the game on 93.7 The Fan at 6:30 PM.
