PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) - Steelers linebacker Ryan Shazier is the recipient of the 2019 George Halas Award by the Pro Football Writers of America.
The award is given out to the player, coach or staff member who "overcomes the most adversity to succeed".
.@steelers LB @RyanShazier, who continues to make remarkable progress after a spinal contusion suffered late in the 2017 season, has been selected as the 2019 George Halas Award winner by the PFWA.
— Pro Football Writers (@PFWAwriters) June 3, 2019Shazier has been unable to play since he suffered a spinal injury in Week 13 of the 2017 season that left him temporarily paralyzed.
Since then Shazier has been working toward one day playing again. Last month he danced at his wedding.
Shazier is the first Steeler to receive the award since John Stallworth in 1985. Rocky Bleier got it in 1975.
Shazier will spend the 2019 season on the team's PUP list.
