PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) - The Pittsburgh Penguins are back on the ice and Jake Guentzel is joining them.
The team began voluntary small-group training on Tuesday at the UPMC Lemieux Sport Complex.
Practices are not open to the public or media.
All players and staff who are allowed inside the facility were tested for COVID-19 before being allowed to participate.
Players and staff are following health recommendations from the CDC and are following guidelines set by the Phase 2 protocol of the NHL’s Return to Play Plan.
And one of the players who has benefited from the long break is Guentzel.
The 25-year-old forward has been out with a shoulder injury since late-December and as scheduled to miss the remainder of the season, but with the playoffs being pushed back because of the global pandemic, He could be available when the playoffs do start against Montreal.
“I’m getting better every day and just kind of sticking to the protocol and what I got to do, if we starting playing, hopefully I’ll be ready by then,” Guentzel said.
The Penguins will take on the Canadiens in a preliminary first-round matchup when the playoffs do get underway.
There is no start date for that yet.
