PITTSBURGH (93.7 The FAN) - Everybody has opinions on Ben Roethlisberger's future with the Steelers and how the Steelers feel about him, but Doug Whaley is more qualified than most to talk about this situation.
Doug joined The PM Team and reacted to what Kevin Colbert had to say last week when talking about Ben's future and also looked at things from Ben's perspective.
Asked what he'd be doing right now if he was Ben's agent, Doug said "If I'm Ben's agent, I'm looking at the quarterback carousel. I would have looked at the Colts. I would be in touch with the Bears. I'd be proactive. Make a decision sooner rather than later."
But what about things from the Steelers perspective? Could they actually cut Ben and just move on?
"Yes. The Steelers could cut Roethlisberger. The Steelers were here before him. And they'll be here when he's gone."
Ben did say the money didn't matter to him this year though, so what does Doug make of those comments?
"That's what they all say," Doug said between laughs.
So in the end, how does Doug seeing things ending up between the Steelers and Ben?
"60% he stays, 40% he goes...The Steelers are gonna have a plan and it's all gonna come down to him if he signs up for that plan."
If he was still part of the Steelers front office making this decision, what would Doug do?
"Me personally, I would say 'Thank you Ben, you're the best, we wouldn't have two Super Bowl trophies without you, you will be a first ballot Hall of Famer, we'll play in the Hall of Fame game when you're inducted, we will have you back to put you on the wall, but thanks for your service, we're gonna have to go in a different direction for both of us."
