Many people have been sharing their thoughts on the passing of legendary Pittsburgh sports broadcaster Stan Savran, but no one was closer to the “Godfather” than Guy Junker.
Guy was the co-host of “Sportsbeat”, which started on KBL, with Stan, working together for decades.
Junker joined Cook & Joe on Tuesday to talk about his memories of Savran.
He says that he and Stan were friends for a decade before being teamed up on “Sportsbeat”. They met at WTAE-TV.
Junker and Savran remained close until his death. He spent the entire week with Stan up until his death.
He told Cook & Joe that he was beating himself up a bit for going to a golf tournament Monday, but Savran’s sister told him Stan would’ve wanted him to go the event.
When it comes to the person he was outside of sports, Junker said that Savran loved Broadway shows and that Stan drove through a whiteout snow storm to Erie to see Guy’s daughter perform.
Guy added that Stan was “a pretty sweet guy when he wasn’t working.”
“I can’t tell you how many times people would come up to me and say “hey, I bumped into your buddy Stan at the dry cleaners or at the gas station and we talked for 15 minutes about the Steelers draft or he posed for pictures with my family’,” said Junker.
