DALLAS (105.3 The Fan) - Per a report from Fox Sports Insider Jay Glazer, after more than a decade with the franchise, that began with his hiring as an offensive coordinator in 2007, the Dallas Cowboys officially parted ways with their head coach, Jason Garrett, on Sunday afternoon.

Garrett will leave as the second-winningest coach in franchise history, behind only Tom Landry, with a 77-59 record in 136 regular-season games, a 2-3 postseason record, and three division titles, as well as one AP Coach of the Year Award in 2016.

The problem for Garrett, however, was never winning football games... it was winning the football games that mattered.

In nine years as the head coach, Garrett won the three division titles but made the playoffs just three times, and never made it past the divisional round.

Whether Dez caught it or not, three playoff appearances and zero in a conference championship game in just under a decade was unacceptable for the world's most valuable and popular sports franchise, at least in the eyes of its owner.

Despite all of the shortcomings through his first eight seasons, it was his ninth that doomed his standing with the franchise.

The Cowboys came into 2019 as one of the NFC's Super Bowl Favorites and got off to a hot start by winning their first three games, only to lose their grip the division down the final stretch of the season, and miss the playoffs entirely.

Given the Joneses' special relationship with Garrett, this was no doubt a decision that was very tough to make. For the overall prosperity of the franchise, however, it was finally time to move on.

Garrett is highly respected around the NFL, and likely won't remain jobless for long. That said, the Cowboys needed a clean slate, and they are now going to get it, thanks to the Joneses making the hard choice.

Dallas will now turn its focus to hiring the head coach that will lead the team into the next decade, with multiple candidates, some known and some as of yet unknown, to be vetted and interviewed by the Joneses.

With that said, whoever is ultimately selected for the job, is going to have a monster of a task in front of them, as he tries to help turn the NFL's most scrutinized team back into a winner.
