PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – Before playing in Boston tonight and dealing with the news of their general manager resigning, Pens head coach Mike Sullivan also mentioning that they lost another defenseman.
Top line pair Brian Dumoulin is week-to-week with a lower-body injury suffered in the game on Tuesday. Dumoulin is an anchor for the defensive unit and long-time linemate of Kris Letang.
Last year was the first season the 8-year vet had an extended injury and now Dumoulin joins Mike Matheson, Marcus Pettersson, Juuso Riikola and Zach Trotman as out. John Marino missed practice yesterday, but will play tonight.
"Just like every other experience that we've gone through from an injury standpoint when someone goes down," Sullvain said Thursday. "We need to make sure that we pick each other up and play a diligent game. It's going to provide opportunity for others to step up and play a more significant role. It's a great opportunity for guys to take advantage of it."
Pens did acquire a new defenseman yesterday, but veteran Yannick Weber was stuck in a snowstorm and will not make it to Boston for tonight's game, but is expected to join the team and be ready for the games in New York starting Saturday.
Kevin Czuczman, who hasn't played in the NHL since 2014, will likely be in the lineup tonight at the 4-1 Bruins.
"Our depth is being tested specifically on the blue line right now," Sullivan said. "We know we have capable people. Our expectation is we are going to win."
