Penguins and Sabres to participate in NHL’s first joint Pride Game

NHL Pride

The Pittsburgh Penguins look to return to the win column when they visit the Buffalo Sabres on Saturday afternoon, but some of the events will be bigger than hockey.

The Penguins and Sabres will be participating in the NHL’s first-ever joint Pride Game.

Aiming to celebrate Pittsburgh and Buffalo’s LGBTQ+ communities, both teams will be urging everyone to raise funds, and awareness.

Both teams have featured nonprofits that they are supporting, for the Penguins it is one created by one of the new first office managers.

Penguins President of Hockey Operations Brian Burke created the You Can Play Project in 2012 with the goal of ensuring safety and inclusion for anyone who wishes to participate in sports.

You Can Play creates a community of allies encouraging a sense of belonging for everyone.

Burke started the project with his son Patrick to honor the late Brendan Burke, Brian’s son and Patrick’s brother who died in 2010 and was 21 years of age.

Auctions, special items, and sales will be open to fans to show their support and the proceeds will go towards local non-profits.
