Former Pirates pitcher Luis Ortiz placed on leave amid gambling investigation

UPDATE 2:

UPDATE: Multiple sources say the investigation is gambling-related.

Former Pirates pitcher Luis Ortiz have been played on the MLB’s non-disciplinary paid leave due to an investigation within the league.

Currently with the Guardians, Ortiz was traded to Cleveland in the offseason from Pittsburgh in the deal that brought first baseman Spencer Horwitz to the Pirates.

The Guardians released a statement that they got a message from Major League Baseball telling them Ortiz was put on the list after an agreement with the MLBPA.

“The Guardians are not permitted to comment further at this time and will respect the league’s confidential investigative process,” the team said in a release.

Ortiz is on leave through the All-Star Break, which ends on July 18.

The 26-year-old is currently 4-9 over 16 starts and a 4.36 ERA with Cleveland.
