I mean, let’s all think with our heads here. Sports fans, by nature, have trouble doing as much. Almost always, we are think-with-our-heart kinda people. Rationale and reasoning get thrown out the window at 100 mph for whims, impulses and often-times, uncommon sense.
But let’s allow logic to prevail, permit reason to resound and sense to succeed --- no way in the world should Pitt quarterback Kenny Pickett play in the Peach Bowl.
You get that? No way in the world should Pitt quarterback Kenny Pickett play in the Peach Bowl. It is almost unfathomable this is even a discussion.
The kid has done enough.
The kid has put the Panthers program on his back and lifted it to heights not realized in (more than) a generation.
He isn’t a quitter if he doesn’t play in the Peach Bowl; he’s a smart businessman if he sits it out.
Period.
The kid has not a lot --- if anything --- to gain in such a game and seemingly everything to lose if he were to go out there against Michigan State. Sure, there is the possibility that Pickett could throw for about a half-bazillion yards against that terrible Spartans pass defense, but would it really do anything to propel his draft stock?
The thinking here is that his place in the draft is pretty darn solidified --- even if he had his own little Sparty Party and torched MSU for a bunch of touchdowns.
But let’s say it isn’t for a moment. Let’s say it is still a little fungible and flexible where Pickett could be drafted.
Know what scouts would be most impressed by? Pickett going out and firing that ball all around the yard in The Senior Bowl as he would be throwing it to the undeniable top receivers who would be covered by the undeniable top defensive backs.
That’s much more impressive than Pitt against Michigan State, even with the admission that both programs have very much improved.
Know where else Pickett would impress a lot more? The NFL Combine.
Save all your good throws for there, KP. Oh, and I can assure you not one defensive player will hit Pickett during the combine, either.
So, when you really think about this, when you sit and have a long think, it is borderline ludicrous this is even a discussion. But talk radio will do that --- and it is a brilliant medium for doing it. Heck, I love it and work in it. We take a topic; we mold, shape and structure it into the confines of the conversation we want to have and it catches with the masses and, in turn, becomes a talking point with them.
This one, however, doesn’t even deserve that much dialogue or a real long confab. I can’t seem to find any angle it makes sense for Kenny Pickett to charge into Atlanta.
You done good, kid.
You done more than that --- you done great, kid.
You made Pitt something it hasn’t been in what feels like forever.
Now go get yours. Forget about that bowl game.
You’ve done enough, Kenny. You’ve done enough.
