PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – It was the Peach Bowl news conference in December where we first heard from Pitt Athletic Director Heather Lyke that he was discussing a contract extension with football coach Pat Narduzzi. Is there a holdup? What is taking so long?
"It's imminent," Lyke said Tuesday. "It's very imminent. We felt the appropriate time made sense. There is no question we are in a good place with that agreement."
When Pat Narduzzi was asked about the contract when Spring drills opened a couple of weeks ago, he noted that he was able to get his assistant coaches 'taken care of'. Then he was going to finalize his deal.
It appears that has happened and an announcement could be days away.
In his seventh season, a breakthrough in terms of record for Narduzzi as the Panthers finished 11-3 and won a first ever ACC championship. Overall the 55-year-old is 53-37 with the Panthers having only one losing season.
His current contract runs through the 2024 season. Narduzzi reportedly made $4.81 million last season, ranked second in the conference. For comparison, USA Today ranked the top 10 coaches' salaries for the 2021 season. Alabama's Nick Saban was tops overall at $9.753 million. Dabo Swinney at Clemson led ACC coaches at $9.508 million with Penn State's James Franklin ninth overall at $7 million.
