PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – A day of celebrating a first road win and moving to 5-0 beating Virginia Tech and now the sobering news for Pitt fans that quarterback Mason Heintschel will miss the rest of the season with a torn ACL.

“We’re heartbroken for Mason, but he’s a resilient young man,” said Pitt head coach Pat Narduzzi in a statement released by the team. “We know he’ll attack his recovery with the same determination he brings to our building every day, and our entire program will be behind him every step of the way. His leadership and ability to help coach up our quarterbacks will remain important to us as we continue to rally together and move forward.”

Graduate student transfer Holden Geriner takes over leading Pitt to the win on Friday night going 8-12 for 78 yards and a touchdown. Geriner played three seasons at Auburn, then last year at Texas State, combined over those four seasons he had just 21 pass attempts and has just 47 career pass attempts with 28 completions for 335 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

Earlier this season Heintschel set an ACC record with seven touchdown passes in a game as the Panthers beat Miami, Ohio. In 15 career games, the 19-year-old captain has 30 touchdown passes to 9 interceptions completing 64.4% of his passes for 3,658 yards.
