93.7 The Fan (PITTSBURGH) - Pitt wins its 300th game at the Petersen Events Center after beating Notre Dame 70-60.
Pitt started off sluggish in the first 7 minutes trailing 12-6 to the Fighting Irish. Then the Panthers turned it on in the final 13 minutes with a 22-10 run to close out the first half.
Pitt would go on a 10-0 run in the second half to build the lead to 15 and would never look back after that. The Panthers shot 40% from three point range and shot 45% from the floor.
Blake Hinson continues to stay hot as he finished with 17 points on 4/7 shooting, all 4 makes were from three pointers. Bub Carrington added 16 points on 5/10 shooting.
"This is a good win for us," said Jeff Capel on the Pitt Panthers going home postgame show. "That's a team that's very physical that plays really really hard, one of the best defensive teams in our league and I thought we did a good job as the game went on. I thought we got good shots throughout, but I thought we did a really good job with moving the basketball, sharing the basketball, finding the right plays and playing with force that's necessary."
The Panthers held Notre Dame to just 26% shooting from three point range and 39% from the floor.
"I thought our defense for the first 35 minutes was outstanding. The last five minutes we had a little bit of a letup once we got a 15 point lead. We have to do a better job in those situations and at the end we have to do a better job of not being scared by the press and not turning the basketball over," said Capel.
The Panthers had ten turnovers on defense and took advantage of that by scoring ten points off those turnovers.
"We knew coming in that they turn the basketball over this year. We wanted to be disciplined with our pressure. I thought our guys did a pretty good job of that," said Capel.
The Panthers are back in action when they travel to NC State Wednesday. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. on 93.7 The Fan.
