PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – It was not Clemson, not North Carolina or Duke, but Pitt ranked as having the best sports season in the ACC in 2022-23.
CBS Sports ranked all Division 1 athletic programs-they were rated in five categories-three main sports-football, men's basketball and women's basketball along with a pair of 'wild cards' to be used for the most successful spectator sports (baseball, softball, volleyball, soccer, gymnastics, lacrosse, hockey and wrestling). It is not a straight formula like the college athletic director's association ranks them. Football gets 2.5 times the weight of any sport, men's basketball two times as much.
Pitt received 377 points and ranked 13th overall and did so despite a zero in women's basketball. That tied the Panthers with Notre Dame and put them just ahead of Duke with Florida State in 16th place. Pitt got 130 points for football with national champion Georgia getting 250, 100 for men's basketball, plus 147 more 'wild card' points presumedly (they don't specify which sports) for men's soccer and women's volleyball making it to the Final Four.
Tennessee voted the best season for an athletic department in 2022-23 with 536.75 points followed by UCLA, Alabama, Texas and TCU rounding out the top five. Two ACC teams have previously finished first, Florida State in 2016-17 and Louisville was the first champ in 2013-14.
