Pitt-WVU announce Backyard Brawl extension

When series resumes in 2029 it will be played through the 2036 season

PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – Both sides have talked about playing it more often. Both value the rivalry and Friday they did something about it. Pitt and West Virginia signed a four-game extension of the series which resumes in 2029.

The schools announcing another four seasons from 2033 until 2036.

“The Backyard Brawl is more than a game: it’s history, passion, and pride passed down through generations," Director of Athletics Allen Greene said. "Extending this rivalry ensures that student-athletes and fans alike continue to experience one of college football’s greatest traditions, and we couldn’t be more excited for what’s ahead.”

The Panthers lead the all-time series 63-41-3 with Pitt winning two of the three in this recent block of games, both Panthers wins at home and in comebacks.

The first recorded game was October 26, 1895, an 8-0 WVU win in Morgantown. The first four were played in West Virginia, in 1898 they played a neutral site game in Fairmont, that the Mountaineers also won. The game was played consistently from 1943 until 2011 when the teams were no longer in the same conference.
