On the day the Pitt Panthers are playing in their first NCAA Tournament game in seven years, the program is taking a blow.

Forward John Hugley IV has announced he is entering the transfer portal.

Hugley was expected to be a big part of the Panthers in 2023 but only played in eight games, sitting out most of the season focusing on his mental health.

“Panther Nation, I would like to first thank you for all the love an support you have shown me the last three years. Mrs. Heather [Lyke], where do I begin! Your words of wisdom, encouragement and support have not gone unnoticed,” Hugley said in part in a statement.

He is also asked for people to respect his decision to enter the transfer portal.

The 21-year-old 6-foot-9, 265-pounder led Pitt in scoring last season averaging 14.8 point and 7.9 rebounds in the 2021-22 season.

He has three years of eligibility left.
