PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – The Pens game got so sideways in the third period, 22-year-old goalie Sergei Murashov was using a Russian saying postgame in trying to reserve judgment on what happened in a 3-2 loss to Winnipeg.

After stopping all 21 shots in the first two periods, a clearing attempt by Erik Karlsson redirected right to a Winnipeg stick to tie the game. The Jets took the lead on a goal set up off the skate of a Pens defenseman and the last coming eight seconds after the Pens tied the game.

That turned Murashov to a philosopher postgame.

“There is a saying in Russian, morning is wiser than evening,” Murashov said.

It’s profound. Also stunning to hear in a post-game interview.

“Just take a good sleep, calmly think about that tomorrow so we can get better from this game, obviously there is always something good and there is always something to improve,” Murashov said.

When he looks back on it, he’ll probably see a pretty solid game where he made eight or so impressive to outstanding saves in the first couple of periods.

“He played well,” said Pens head coach Dan Muse. “You look at that first period, especially that last five-to-seven minutes, just some of the saves that he made where we were not on point and he made some huge saves to weather some storms.”

“He gave us a chance at least to stay in this game, he couldn’t have done anything differently,” said forward Rickard Rakell. “He played great for us.”

“He played great, kept us in it all night,” said defenseman Declan Carlile.

The Pens finished with 22 giveaways.

“I know for sure we felt in this room that we gave them most of their chances,” Rakell said. “We got to clean some stuff up and get better.”

Maybe Tuesday morning will be wiser than Monday night.

Unique scoring

A day after Alexander Ovechkin announced this will be his final season, the Pens play at Washington Wednesday at 7:30p.
