Alex Nedeljkovic becomes the first goalie in NHL history to score a goal and record an assist in the same game.
Nedeljkovic grabbed the puck behind the net and saucer passed it down the ice into an empty net with less than 3 minutes to play in the hockey game.
"I always enjoyed playing the puck growing up, I watched some of the best guys do it, Marty Turco, Marty Brodeur, two guys that I watched a lot and really learned a lot from in terms of puck handling," said Nedeljkovic.
He was named the Penguins goalie after they waived Tristan Jarry Wednesday afternoon. Ned made 40 saves on 42 shots. The Pens only had 19 shots on net.
"I thought he was spectacular all night," said head coach Mike Sullivan. "He made some huge saves throughout the course of the game. I don't think we were as tight as we needed to be defensively and he was there to make the save for us."
Despite the low shot total, Buffalo committed 4 penalties in the game and the Penguins took advantage. They went 3 for 4 on the power play.
"The power play was terrific tonight. I thought the power play and Ned made the difference for us tonight. I know we're capable of another level of 5 on 5 and we've played a better game of 5 on 5 most recently," said Sullivan.
Trailing 1-0 after the first period, the Pens scored three goals in the second period. Rickard Rakell, Anthony Beauvillier and Cody Glass all found the back of the net, giving Pittsburgh a 3-1 lead headed into the third period. Nedeljkovic got the assist on the Glass goal.
Bryan Rust added a power play goal in the third period and Nedeljkovic's empty netter put the game away.
"I got it behind the net, I spinned around and I let it go. I didn't know at first if it was on line, it could have been in the corner, it could have gotten two feet off the ground or not even left the ice. I wasn't sure, I got a little bump when one of their guys spinned me around. I didn't see it until it was probably at the far blue and at that point I saw it was on line but I saw it was on the ice so I didn't think it had much to it but everybody was going nuts and Karl had his arms in the air so I thought 'oooh this is gonna go in!' and then I made a straight B-line for the bench," said Nedeljkovic.
Ned joins only Jarry in Penguins history for a goalie goal.
The Pens play the Capitals Saturday night as they continue their seven game road trip. Joel Blomqvist is expected to get the start for Pittsburgh. He was recalled Wednesday after Jarry was sent to Wilkes-Barre.
