PITTSBURGH (93.7 the Fan) The Pittsburgh Penguins are finally making changes to their goaltending situation, but not necessarily on the ice.
Goaltending coach Mike Buckley has been relieved of his duties and Andy Chiodo has been hired in replacement.
Chiodo, 38, was previously the Penguins goaltending development coach, working with Penguins prospect goalies throughout the organization.
"Andy has done a terrific job mentoring our young goaltenders. In addition to on- and off-ice training, he emphasizes the importance of life habits and mental approach to the game," said Penguins general manager Ron Hextall. "We know Andy will be a great addition to the coaching staff. The Penguins are grateful to Mike Buckley for his contributions to the team and wish him and his family the best going forward."
Chiodo was drafted by the Penguins in 2003 and played eight games in the NHL, all with Pittsburgh.
Including the NHL, Chiodo played professional hockey for 14 years, from Europe, the ECHL, and AHL.
It's not the big goalie replacement Pens fans have been jiving for since the end of the season, but it is an off ice move that could have a positive effect on the team.
