PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – Pens claimed a former Washington Capitals forward off waivers Friday before they host the Kings Sunday night.

25-year-old Matthew Phillips to the Pens after appearing in 27 games with one goal and four assists, his last point coming in December. 5'8", 160-pound Phillips has also played with his native Calgary Flames.


His six seasons in the AHL were productive 237 points (103 goals) in 265 games and last season had career-highs in goals (36) and assists (76). He was twice an All-Star including last season. A sixth-round pick in 2016, Phillips was a team captain with 281 points (136 goals) in 215 career Western Hockey League games.

Phillips is on a one-year contract and helps with the rash of forward injuries-Jake Guentzel, Noel Acciari, Jansen Harkins and Matt Nieto.
