PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – The concern with 2021 first-round pick Henry Davis coming into the season was his defense. It turned out it was his lack of offense that landed him in AAA on Friday.

Davis was sent down as veteran, switch-hitting catcher Yasmani Grandal was activated off the injured list as he was dealing with plantar fasciitis since early in training camp.

The 24-year-old Davis was hitting .162 in 23 games with three doubles and four RBI and a slugging percentage of .206.

“Offensively, there are some adjustments that have to be made,” said Pirates manager Derek Shelton before the start of the homestand against Colorado Friday night. “I think there are some adjustments that the major league game has showed him that need to be made.”

“It’s one of those things with Yaz coming off (the injured list), it’s a chance for Henry to catch his breath a little bit. I think the thing that we know about Henry is he is probably one of the hardest workers I’ve ever been around at the major league level. He is going to go down there with a task and work on it.”

The right-handed hitting Davis showed some pop at spots in his rookie season with 10 doubles and seven home runs in 225 at bats, two of those home runs in his last six games of the 2023 season. Since April 12, Davis has managed only three singles.

“I think the thing that we know about Henry is he is probably one of the hardest workers I’ve ever been around at the major league level,” Shelton said. “He is going to go down there with a task and work on it.”

Davis will likely get the opportunity to catch 2023 first-round pick Paul Skenes in Indianapolis Sunday.
