The Pirates are showing they want to keep 2nd baseman Brandon Lowe in black & gold.
The organization extended a qualifying offer to Lowe today.
It’s a one-year contract worth $23.15 million.
MLB qualifying offers were due by 5 p.m. on Monday. Lowe has until November 17 to accept or reject the offer.
Even if he rejects the offer, he can continue to negotiate a new, long-term deal with Pittsburgh.
If Lowe declines the offer and signs with another team for $50 million or more, the Pirates will get a draft pick at the end of the first round.
If he signs elsewhere and his deal is less than $50 million, the Pirates will get a later draft pick.
While Lowe could sign, it’s believed that he wants to test the free agent market.
