PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – It's been nearly two decades that a Pirates pitcher took a no-hitter into the 7th and lost. That was the fate of Tyler Anderson Monday night as the Padres scored twice in the inning for a 2-0 San Diego win.
Padres managed only two hits off Anderson, the seventh started with a walk, then Wil Myers singled and scored on Tommy Pham's sacrifice fly. Austin Nola with a RBI double for the other.
"Be a lot more fun if I didn't walk that first guy," Anderson said of the seventh inning. "It took five pitches to have a guy on first which is not fun. I felt like I was a little out of my delivery in the fourth, fifth and seventh and making pitches where I didn't want them to go."
"I feel like wins and losses are the most satisfying part."
"He's been outstanding," Shelton said of Anderson. "Obviously that's a playoff caliber lineup, probably about as good a lineup as we are going to face. Especially for him with all of the right-handers in there. He was outstanding."
Bucs had the first real opportunity to score with runners on first and third in the second. Second baseman Ha-Seong Kim robbed Michael Perez of a RBI with a diving stop to his left of a sharply hit ground ball and had plenty of time to throw out the Pirates catcher.
The Pirates haven't scored a run in 20 consecutive innings.
"The concern is we need to create more baserunners," Shelton said. "When we win games, we have the ability to move and hit-and-run and do things. When you don't have a lot of baserunners, it's harder to do that. We aren't going to sit and bang with anybody. We have to make sure that we are trying to create more run scoring opportunities. Tonight we didn't."
Hayes swinging
Ke'Bryan Hayes planned to take soft-toss swings before the game on Monday.
"We will see how that goes and go from there," Shelton said. "Every day you see him around it's a reminder of how special of a kid he is. We have to make sure to work to get him back."
Kuhl news
On the injured list since April 22 with a sore shoulder, righty Chad Kuhl is with the team and throwing. Bucs are encouraged with how it went. He would be eligible to be activated during the off day on Thursday. Trevor Cahill scheduled to pitch Friday afternoon in Chicago.
Feliz returns
Righty reliever Michael Feliz returned from a cracked fingernail on Monday.
"We've seen him throw two live BPs," Shelton said. "The ball has come out of his hand well. We are excited to have him back in the fold."
Stallings fine
Not in the lineup Monday, Shelton said catcher Jacob Stallings is fine after taking a pitch off his nose Sunday afternoon. He tested out good before getting on the plane, after getting off the plane and again Monday morning.
"He was only going to catch two of these three games," Shelton said. "After yesterday, not only getting hit in the face, but blocking a lot of those balls. Felt like the right time to get him off his feet and give him a little bit of a blow."
Goodwin gone
Pirates released outfielder Brian Goodwin who was with the alt site in Pittsburgh and decided not to pursue an opportunity in Triple A. The 30-year-old veteran hit .229 with a homer and 6 RBI in Spring Training.
West Coast return
"I think it is strange," Shelton said. "When you are on a flight for four and a half hours after about an hour and a half, which most were last year. I haven't been back here (San Diego) since '05. This was the first trip I took in the big leagues as a coach."
It's the first Pirates West Coast game since September 19, 2019 and first trip to San Diego since May 19, 2019.
