BUC NOTES-Offense explodes in rout of Orioles

Newman goes 2 for 2 before leaving with injury

PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – Every Pirates starter reached base safely and seven different Pirates scored as the Bucs close the first week of Spring Training games with a season-high of 13 runs in a 13-1 win over Baltimore Sunday.

Newman hot, but hurt

Kevin Newman a pair of hits and RBI, also scored on a wild pitch.  However the shortstop had to leave the game with left hamstring tightness after the third inning.

“We pulled him out precautionary wise,” said manager Derek Shelton.  “He felt it a little bit.  With the off-day coming and he wasn’t going to play much more anyway.  We just thought for the betterment of being conservative.”

The 27-year-old has five singles and a double in eight Spring Training at bats.

Frazier Rerun

Adam Frazier made his first appearance in a Grapefruit League game, leading off as the DH.  He went 2 for 3 with a RBI and a run scored.

“He ran the bases fine,” Shelton said.  “He had to go first to third.  He had to go hard on a ground ball.  Good test.  He’s very close to being on the field.  Take a look on Tuesday to possibly get out there.”

Brubaker 2nd outing

JT Brubaker started, pitching two scoreless innings, giving up a pair of hits with no walks or strikeouts.

“I thought it went good,” Brubaker said.  “My main focus today is putting the ball in the zone and making them swing.  Good day to do it with the wind blowing in.  Wanted to focus and getting ahead and put them away.”

“Quick outs means less pitches.  Means longer into the game.  Takes some load off the bullpen as well.”

Brubaker says he has ‘all the confidence in the world’ in the gloves behind him and in front of him.  He also showed some defensive ability starting a 1-4-3 double play.

“It was an exciting play in my mind,” Brubaker said.  “Not too often do you get a ball back to you other than fielding a bunt or covering first.  When you get a ground ball back to you.  You are able to start a double play and get multiple outs.  It’s a good feeling.  It means you made your pitch.”

Bullpen work

The Pirates bullpen combined to give up a run (Richard Rodriguez on two hits with two strikeouts).  Chase DeJong pitched a pair of scoreless innings, Kyle Crick struck out 3 with a hit and a walk in his inning.  Clay Holmes and Chasen Shreve each with a clean inning.

Mars HS grad David Bednar pitched a scoreless 9th, allowing his first base runner on a walk and 2 whiffs.  The righty has struck out 7 of the 10 batters in 2021 and has not allowed a hit in three games.
