The Pirates traded right-handed pitcher Edgar Santana to the Atlanta Braves for cash considerations.
Santana was designated for assignment earlier this week to make room on the 40-man roster after the Pirates made a trade with the L.A.
Angles to acquire righty reliever Kyle Keller.
The Bucs gave up cash considerations in that deal.
When a player's contract is DFA'd the team has seven days to either trade the player or place him on irrevocable outright waivers (meaning he is taken off the 40-man roster but remains in the club's system).
Santana appeared in 69 games for the Pirates when he last pitched in 2018. He had a 3.26 ERA with 54 strikes outs and 12 walks.
He underwent Tommy John surgery in 2018, spent 2019 rehabbing and last season was suspended for PED use.
Santana returned in Spring Training making seven appearances striking out 8 and walking 1. He did give up 8 earned runs.
The 29-year-old was becoming one of the Pirates' more reliable set up men in 2018 and apparently the Braves think he can be that again.
