PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – In his full season as the Pirates manager, Don Kelly reached a milestone with the Bucs 5-1 win over Seattle Thursday afternoon. It was win 100 to which Kelly quipped.
“Hopefully the next 100 is quicker than this 100.”
The 46-year-old is 100-105 overall in his first managerial opportunity, which puts him 20th all-time in Bucs win percentage at .488, a spot behind Jim Leyland (.496) and two behind Clint Hurdle (.505) for the best winning percentages since the 1970’s. It’s not to directly compare those three, but just an idea of where he stands.
Veteran Brandon Lowe has played for a couple of managers in his career, he said he loves them all, but what he really appreciates about the Mt. Lebanon High School graduate.
“He’s probably one of the most sincere people I’ve ever met,” Lowe said. “You go see him he’s asking about the family, how the kids are doing. It’s a different kind of manager than anyone I’ve ever had. It’s a very genuine type of guy and he’s been awesome to play for so far.”
Lowe said that just makes him very easy to play for. You believe in his decisions and trust that he’s done his research and homework.
“He wants the best for everyone in here as well,” Lowe added. “When you have a guy like that at the helm, he’s easy to follow.”
Bubba Chandler said he earns everything and deserves recognition for getting to the century mark.
“He's the best,” said catcher Henry Davis. “I love coming to the field every day. It's really easy to learn from him, coach from him and play for him. I think everybody shares that sentiment.”
“Honestly, I didn't even know until after the game,” Kelly said as he was greeted by a rowdy welcome to the clubhouse by the players after the game. “Even talking to the staff and the guys, it's bigger than me in what we're trying to accomplish.”
“Like I said, hopefully next 100 comes a lot quicker.”
