PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – The good news after suffering the injury on Monday night was that Endy Rodriguez's index finger was not broken. The bad news is it was severely lacerated off a pitch from Paul Skenes that deflected off the batter. He needed around six stitches Monday night and Rodriguez going in injured reserve as first reported by MLB.com's Alex Stumpf.
Rodriguez had started every game but was not only catching, but the primary first baseman. The 24-year-old switch-hitter was batting .178 with a .260 on-base percentage and .504 OPS through 45 at bats. He had a trio of doubles and pair of RBIs.
The initial move is for right-handed reliever Chase Shugart to rejoin the team. Picked up in the offseason, the 28-year-old pitched in three games this year with the Pirates, 3.2 innings, two hits, two walks, two strikeouts, but no runs allowed. He was originally a 12th round pick by the Red Sox in 2018 out of the University of Texas.
